What We Leave Behind
Written In Memory Of
One day a soul was about to enter the Gates of Heaven. Up ahead was an angel at the Gate who watched the soul approached. The angel then extended a hand. Then, just as the soul was about to take the hand of the angel, the soul paused and looked back down to earth. “Why do you not take my hand and enter and what are you looking for?” asked the angel to the soul. The soul said, “I want to make sure that those who cannot see me in my changed form remember.” The angel asked, “Remember what? You?” “No” replied the soul, “that they remember the essence of my love, and see beyond the mistakes all humans make, and to remember that living isn’t about being perfect, but more so, about just doing the best we can, while we have the time to do it.” The soul continued, “You see angel, you will never really know what I mean. You’ll never know the physical sense of being a parent or a child. You’ll never know about the worry or fear of being a simple man. You’ll never know the great joys of human existence. You’ll never cry a single tear. You are transcendental, spirit. But I, I lived all through all life’s triumphs, and tragedies, the love and the misfortune, and that’s what I want them to remember, that I was good and decent man, who lived life and tried to achieve, who was a man and did what I could, who wasn’t a perfect human but did the best with what I had.” The angel thought deeply about what the soul had said. Then said to the soul…
nothing really ever dies
because the soul exists beyond man’s time
and the deeds you’ve done, now left behind
are what light’s the Heaven’s and angels eyes
So do not fear or judge to hard
for G-d weighs the deeds within the heart
and deeds done from a righteous man
in the hearts of all who were his family and friends
Angels may not know how to cry
or live lives that men below must find
but we see your pain and do what we can
and we understand what it is to be a man
and it is now time for you take my hand
The angel then asked, “Are you ready?” The soul smiled and said yes and taking the hand of the angel entered the Gates of Heaven knowing nothing ever really dies because the love left behind lives on in the people that soul graced with it’s time on earth.
And the angle?
The angel wept.
